Pengantar Tematik

70 tahun sejak proyek geopolitik ambisius Konferensi Bandung yang digagas oleh negara-negara bekas jajahan merumuskan sikap tegas terhadap dua kutub besar, benang dalam jelujur Sejarah Dunia seperti masuk ke lubang yang sama tiga-empat lajur sebelumnya. Tragedi kemanusiaan karena kedaulatan masih terjadi, kebangkitan rezim-rezim yang menekan multivokalitas dan keadilan sosial belum pula tercapai. Semuanya bermutasi menjadi bahasa birokrasi nan rumit yang terkesan hanya dapat diurai oleh para pencipta atau gatekeeper bahasanya.

Gefährlich leben! Vivere pericolosamente! Vivere pericoloso! Hidup dalam bahaya…

Provokasi yang dilayangkan Nietzsche untuk menjawab krisis eksistensial manusia lewat frasa ‘hidup dalam bahaya’ mengalami tarik ulur dramatis di Sejarah Dunia. Oleh Mussolini, frasa ini menjadi kredo untuk membela negara Italia Raya dan fasisme; oleh Soekarno, ia dimaknai sebagai fase yang mesti dilalui Indonesia dalam revolusi yang tak pernah berhenti melawan imperialisme. Keduanya mewakili masa-masa genting dalam peristiwa geopolitik besar, Perang Dunia II dan puncak Perang Dingin. Soekarno menyematkan Tahun pada frasa tersebut sebagai pembacaan atas momentum otak-atik kekuatan imperialis di kawasan Selatan Global yang menuntut gerak bersama dalam kerangka revolusioner yang romantik, lewat rekontekstualisasi Konferensi Bandung sebagai muara pemikiran dekolonisasi dan aktivisme. Gerakan-gerakan masyarakat yang bertahan hingga hari ini, yang belajar bersama-sama untuk menandingi bahasa para gatekeeper, baik itu praktik filibuster, mengakali algoritma dan sistem, dan menciptakan noise.

Gerakan massa yang mengutilisasi keserentakan gambar bergerak dalam teknologi media di era kontemporer menggubah puisi baru atas peristiwa massa. Jarak antara tubuh-kamera-platform distribusi-montase dalam peristiwa massa lintas lokasi menawarkan refleksi berlapis atas waktu dan definisi ulang atas hakikat kemanusian, hidup bersama lewat irisan sejarah personal dan sejarah publik. Dengan kesadaran atas eksperimentasi dan aktivisme ini, ARKIPEL ingin menggali wacana sinematik yang memetakan agenda produksi pengetahuan bersama atas bagaimana membangun kesadaran hidup ulang-alik antara sistem dan non-sistem sebagai individu atau kolektif—bukan hanya dalam tema-tema yang diangkat dan bentuk estetika, tetapi juga dalam cara produksi dan distribusi yang revolusioner.

Tema ini mengundang interpretasi dan metode sinematik seluas-luasnya dalam membedah persoalan genting di irisan yang privat dan publik. Years of Living Dangerously, menjadi pemantik untuk merakit imajinasi baru dalam menyiasati zero-sum game dari realitas geopolitik hari ini. Terlepas kita semua hidup di lokasi yang memberikan ‘cetakan’ untuk bergerak–cincin api, patahan, subtropik– dan sejarah kawasan yang berbeda, hasrat untuk hidup menyiasati bahaya menjadi hasrat kolektif untuk membangun dunia baru.

Thematic Introduction

70 years after the ambitious geopolitical project of the Bandung Conference—conceived by newly independent nations to articulate a resolute stance beyond the binary poles of global power—the thread in the fabric of World History appears to slip back into the same aperture it once traversed several lanes prior. Humanitarian tragedies committed in the name of sovereignty persist; regimes that suppress multivocality continue to rise; social justice remains deferred. These conditions mutate into increasingly impenetrable bureaucratic languages, seemingly decipherable only by those who author and guard their codes.

Gefährlich leben! Vivere pericolosamente! Vivere pericoloso! To live dangerously…

Nietzsche’s provocation—”to live dangerously”—as a response to modernity’s existential crisis has undergone dramatic ideological contestations across World History. For Mussolini, it became a credo in defense of a Greater Italy and the machinery of fascism; for Soekarno, it signified a necessary passage within Indonesia’s unending revolution against imperialism. Both invocations emerged at acute geopolitical thresholds—World War II and the apex of the Cold War. By affixing the word “Years” to the phrase, Soekarno rendered it a temporal diagnosis: a reading of imperial recalibrations across the Global South that demanded collective motion within a romantic-revolutionary framework, recontextualizing the Bandung Conference as a crucible of decolonial thought and activist praxis. Movements that endure to this day continue to learn how to counter the language of gatekeepers—through filibuster as tactic, the subversion of algorithms and systems, the production of noise.

Mass movements that mobilize the simultaneity of moving images within contemporary media technologies compose new poetics of collective events. The shifting proximities between body–camera–platform–distribution–montage, unfolding across dispersed geographies, generate layered reflections on time and rearticulate the meaning of being human: living together at the intersection of personal histories and public histories. With an awareness of this entanglement between experimentation and activism, ARKIPEL seeks to excavate a cinematic discourse that maps an agenda for the collective production of knowledge—on how to cultivate a consciousness that moves back and forth between system and non-system, as individuals and as collectives. This inquiry unfolds not only through thematic and aesthetic propositions, but equally through revolutionary modes of production and distribution.

This theme invites the broadest possible interpretations and cinematic methodologies to interrogate urgencies situated at the threshold of the private and the public. Years of Living Dangerously becomes a catalyst for assembling new imaginaries capable of navigating the zero-sum game of contemporary geopolitics. Regardless of the geographies that imprint our movements—ring of fire, fault lines, subtropics—and despite the distinct histories that shape our regions, the desire to live through danger transforms into a collective desire to construct a new world.

Institutional Response to the 2025 Crisis

Teks berikut merupakan pernyataan resmi ARKIPEL sebagai tanggapan terhadap situasi sosial-politik yang terjadi pada saat penyelenggaraan festival. Dikeluarkan di tengah meningkatnya keresahan publik dan demonstrasi nasional, deklarasi ini menandai pergeseran kelembagaan yang menentukan—dari format festival menjadi ruang solidaritas dan perlawanan. Ini berfungsi sebagai dokumen arsip komitmen ARKIPEL untuk menyelaraskan praktik kuratorial dan organisasinya dengan urgensi momen historis tersebut.

Years of Living Dangerously – ARKIPEL Melawan!

Hari-hari ini bukanlah hari perayaan. Hari-hari ini adalah hari genting: ketika tuntutan rakyat atas keadilan sosial, demokrasi, dan akuntabilitas negara bergema di seluruh penjuru Indonesia—dan dijawab dengan represi serta kekerasan.

ARKIPEL, yang selama ini menjadi laboratorium membaca geopolitik melalui sinema dokumenter dan eksperimental, kini memperluas dirinya:
menjadi mimbar perlawanan, ruang solidaritas, dan titik temu gerakan rakyat.

Markas kami, Forum Lenteng, dibuka sebagai hotspot perjuangan, bagian dari denyut People Power yang tengah bangkit.

Film-film dan diskusi yang kami kurasi di bawah tema Years of Living Dangerously tidak kami hadirkan sebagai tontonan, melainkan sebagai pemantik kesadaran, sebagai senjata berpikir, sebagai agenda mengorganisir perlawanan.

The following text constitutes ARKIPEL’s official statement of position in response to the socio-political situation unfolding at the time of the festival’s implementation. Issued amidst escalating public unrest and nationwide demonstrations, this declaration marks a decisive institutional shift—from festival format to a space of solidarity and resistance. It stands as an archival document of ARKIPEL’s commitment to aligning its curatorial and organizational practice with the urgencies of the historical moment.

Years of Living Dangerously — ARKIPEL Resists!

5–13 September 2025 at Forum Lenteng

These are not days for celebration. These are critical days; days of peril—when the people’s demands for social justice, democracy, and state accountability reveberate across Indonesia, only to be met with repression and violence.

In response to the country’s escalating crisis, ARKIPEL refuses to carry on as though nothing has changed. What was planned as a festival is no longer a festival. We are setting aside every trace of festivity to declare our stance: joining the people’s struggle matters more.

This year, ARKIPEL transforms itself into an open space—a living hub for solidarity and a gathering point for resistance movements. Our base at Forum Lenteng is open as a hotspot of struggle, beating with the pulse of People Power on the rise.

Film screenings and discussions remain, but not as festival showcases. They are no longer framed as cultural events to be celebrated, but as sparks of awareness, weapons for thought, and instruments for organizing resistance.
