In The Year of Quiet Sun

The Otolith Group

2013, United Kingdom

34 min. stereo, HD, Color

Sinopsis / Synopsis

In the Year of the Quiet Sun memeriksa aksi pembentukan solidaritas melalui benda kecil keseharian: prangko.

In the Year of the Quiet Sun examines the solidarity-building effort through small everyday objects: postage stamps. This video essay connects the “year of the quiet sun,” which allowed astronomical observation of the sun’s surface, with the geopolitical agendas of Pan-Africanism and Afro-Asian solidarity. We are invited to observe the independence stamps—tiny icons that cross postal borders—as networks for disseminating ideas of the decolonization project and as records of the efforts that countered it.

Director’s Biography / Biografi Sutradara

The Otolith Group was founded by artist and theorist Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun in 2002. The anatomical entity of the otolith functions as a kind of figurative black box for containing intention and calculating imbalance. Articulating the idea of Otolith with that of Group refers to a history of collective practice formed by artists who theorize and theorists who practice art, both within and beyond the UK.

Eshun and Sagar’s post-cinematic practice is influenced by the aesthetics of the essay film, taking the form of contemporary science fiction, where moving images, sonic speculation, performance, publication, and installation explore intertemporal crises and interscalar catastrophes that shape a Techno-Feudal present. The Otolith Group has exhibited their work internationally for over 20 years. Otolith Collective is a public platform that has curated exhibitions, organized events, discussions, and workshops for the past 15 years.
