Curator: Videotage
Videotage diundang untuk berpartisipasi dalam ARKIPEL Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival 2025 yang diselenggarakan Forum Lenteng dan berlangsung pada bulan September. Sebagai bagian dari program ini, Videotage menghadirkan dua pemutaran khusus bertema Pieces of Piecing, menampilkan 18 karya dari 16 seniman.
Tema ARKIPEL tahun ini, Years of Living Dangerously, mengulas bagaimana seniman merespons masa kini dan masa lalu melalui citra bergerak di tengah ketegangan antarbangsa. Proyek kuratorial Videotage, Pieces of Piecing, terdiri atas dua pemutaran tematik: Alternative Animation dan Historical Connections.
Tema ini berpijak pada dua gagasan kunci. “Pieces” merujuk pada fragmen yang tercerai-berai, hilang, atau terpendam—baik berupa serpihan ingatan personal maupun sisa ingatan kolektif. “Piecing” menegaskan praktik merangkai, menata ulang, dan merekonstruksi fragmen tersebut. Pieces of Piecing tidak hanya menampilkan fragmen yang melekat dalam karya, tetapi juga menyoroti proses kolase—bagaimana seniman dengan cara tak resmi dan terdesentralisasi menggali ingatan yang terlupakan dan menyusunnya kembali menjadi konstelasi bermakna.
Kolase merupakan fondasi animasi. Alternative Animation mengeksplorasi keragaman bahasa animasi dan teknik kolase—dari film 16mm, GIF, foto bergerak, machinima, hingga sekuens berbasis AI. Program ini merayakan keluasan medium, merangkai benang naratif baru dan membuka perspektif imajinatif segar.
Historical Connections menelaah identitas, memori keluarga, luka kolektif, serta bayang-bayang konflik melalui lensa sejarah, mengupas simpul-simpul Asia yang saling bertaut dan kusut. Di balik catatan sejarah yang tampak objektif, para seniman mencari fragmen alternatif sebagai titik pijak untuk menafsirkan ulang sejarah dalam konteks geopolitik berbeda.
Empat seniman lokal—Lam Wing Sze, Kaho Albert Yu, Law Yuk Mui, dan Wong Winsome Dumalagan—hadir di Indonesia untuk mengikuti pemutaran dan diskusi pascapemutaran. Selama festival, Yu akan memimpin lokakarya animasi 3D, sementara Wong menelusuri arsip video Forum Lenteng untuk memetakan perkembangan medan video lokal sekaligus menjalin hubungan antara komunitas seni video Hong Kong dan Indonesia.
Videotage has been invited to participate in the 2025 edition of the ARKIPEL Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival, organised by Forum Lenteng, which will take place this September. As part of the programme, Videotage will present two special screenings under the theme Pieces of Piecing, featuring 18 works by 16 artists.
This year’s ARKIPEL theme is Years of Living Dangerously. Amid rising tensions between nations, the festival explores how artists use moving images to respond to both the present and the past. Videotage’s curatorial project, Pieces of Piecing, comprises two thematic screenings: Alternative Animation and Historical Connections.
The theme draws on two key ideas. “Pieces” refers to scattered, lost, or buried fragments—whether they come from shards of personal memory or remnants of collective memory. “Piecing” highlights the acts and practices of assembling, reorganising, and reconstructing these fragments. Pieces of Piecing not only showcases the fragments embedded in the works, but also draws attention to the collage process—how artists, through unofficial and decentralised means, excavate forgotten memories and reconnect them into meaningful constellations.
Collage forms the foundation of animation. Alternative Animation explores diverse animation languages and collage techniques—from 16mm film, GIFs, moving photographs, machinima to AI-generated sequences. This programme celebrates the medium’s variety, piecing together new narrative threads and unlocking new imaginative perspectives.
Historical Connections adopts a historical lens to explore identity, family memory, collective wounds, and the lingering spectre of conflict, offering a close examination of the intertwined and tangled strands of Asia’s past. Within seemingly objective historical records, artists search for alternative fragments as points of entry, reinterpreting history in different geopolitical contexts.
Four local artists—Lam Wing Sze, Kaho Albert Yu, Law Yuk Mui and Wong Winsome Dumalagan—will travel to Indonesia to attend the screening events and post-screening discussions. During the festival, Yu will lead a 3D animation workshop, while Wong will delve into Forum Lenteng’s video archives, tracing the development of the local video scene and fostering connections between the video art communities of Hong Kong and Indonesia.

Videotage adalah organisasi nirlaba terkemuka di Hong Kong yang berfokus pada presentasi, promosi, produksi, dan pelestarian seni video dan media, melayani para seniman dalam jaringan seni dan budaya teknologi yang berkembang. Since 1986, Videotage has developed itself from an umbrella for media artists to a network of media art and culture for cross-disciplinary cultural productions, as well as a platform to facilitate international exchange.
