Spanning a single generation of gulls, The Inheritors explores the interplay between ring-billed gulls, humans and their waste on an isolated island north-east of Montreal and at a landfill site. The camera follows and observes the birth of a new generation of gulls through to adulthood, tracking their parents as they scavenge for food at the landfill site whilst facing tractors, flare guns and falcons deployed by humans to deter their presence. The bodies of the surviving gulls ultimately serve as an archive of the Anthropocene, documenting the cumulative changes since they were on the brink of extinction in the early twentieth century.

Serge-Olivier Rondeau (b. 1988) is a filmmaker whose work intersects media arts and experimental ethnography. His films and installations explore the relationships between humans and non-humans—particularly animals, plants and technology. His work has appeared in numerous exhibits and festivals across Canada and internationally, including as a member of the group Épopée and co-founder of the After Faceb00k collective. In 2021, he co-directed his first feature-length documentary Ressources with Hubert Caron-Guay, which made its premiere at IDFA. The Inheritors, his second documentary feature, launched at Dok Leipzig.
