Darkness envelops the forest on the Hungary–Serbia border at a key point along the Balkan routes. In that darkness, the complex interplay of state surveillance, the natural world and the social reality of Afghan smugglers merges and occasionally surfaces as light flickers through. Waking Hours follows the daily rituals and calls of those waiting during their hours of vigil. The global immigration and geopolitical crisis is revealed through the figures and perceptions of those who respond to the human need to cross national borders, entering and experiencing the Schengen Area as it stands today.
