Testimony of the Ruins

Kesaksian sang Reruntuhan

Curator: Ananta Wijayarana

The visual sequences in Miari Texas (2025, Yunmi Jang) are built in stages. We are not directly shown by moving images. Still images dominate at the beginning. They’re more detailed, so they speak more than moving images. Still images not only show the remains of human activity in detail. Juxtaposed with ambient sounds and the narrator’s voice, the landscapes of Miari, a dead area, come back to life, refusing to be erased from the history of prostitution that once occurred in South Korea. As moving images begin to appear on the screen, the images’ sublimity becomes apparent, further emphasizing Miari’s location nestled between the tall buildings, the main framework of Seoul.

This stage of assembled images and sounds is then collided with in the second act of the film. If in the first half we enter into a measured sound design, which is constructed into a kind of soundscape, then in the second half we will find a loud sound nuance, which comes from recording on location. This was done to juxtapose the more current situation currently being faced by the Miari residents. The land dispute between the state, which is the official system, and workers outside the system who have long lived in Miari brings us to the core of the ongoing conflict.

The resilience of the people of Miari is further emphasized in the film’s third act. The voice of the aunty, a madame in Miari, becomes the central figure, though her identity remains unseen. Apart from the combination of still and moving images, in some parts, Yunmi deliberately eliminates the presence of visuals and only presents the aunty’s speech. This is where the narrative element becomes crucial. Yunmi uses interview techniques to explore the aunty’s self-narrative. Through narrative storytelling, we are able to access the aunty’s experiences. It goes beyond the visual, moving back and forth from past, present, to future.

What’s also interesting is the presence of cats in the film. Their appearance in certain sequences serves as a transitional marker and a sign of the changing landscape in which they live. When the human bodies are absent from Miari, all that remains are fragments of the past and cats that bear witness to the dynamics of the struggle for interests between the Government and citizens trying to survive. We can see that the audiovisual in this film is designed by playing with the loudness and softness of the audiovisual material in it.

Miari, the last remaining red-light district in Seoul, South Korea, is about to be demolished. Miari stood, tucked between the tall buildings. They hide behind the official system of a country that determines prostitution to be illegal. So it is clear that prostitution in South Korea is a dark place, where legally these workers have no guarantees. But on the other hand, they still have to pay the rent to building owners, and also taxes to the government. Amidst the official system that surrounds the people who live in it, this dark area becomes an option for the outcasts. When they are unable to survive to meet economic needs, this dark space is the last place for them. By commodifying their bodies, these sex workers can survive for a while.

This dark place was eventually considered a parasite. Its slum-like condition slowly but surely became a target for demolition. Miari has long been associated with an area full of death and things that are considered negative. During the Japanese occupation, this place was used as a public cemetery, and part of it was built as a housing complex for the cemetery guards. Independence from Japan also marked the outbreak of the Korean War, Miari became a prime target area for refugee victims of the war in the 1950s. Since then, South Korea has always promoted continuous regional development. Miari became a place of refuge from the evictions of their native areas. Historically, we can see that those who moved to Miari faced a gray status, leading to the development of prostitution in the area.

This prostitution area always raises problems because of its illegal status, and is also a vortex of problems, ranging from ethics and morals to capital issues concerning wages and deposits to brothel building owners. The interests in this issue then converged at Miari, gathered, and fought each other. The film effectively captures the essence of these overlapping interests in the form of physical texts that were pasted to the walls and scattered along the Miari alley. As with the interests mentioned above, the texts also show the same fight, starting from congratulations on the approval of the Miari development project, gobo projector text containing a message condemning violence against sex workers, to the very domestic text pasted to the wall prohibiting people from dumping trash.

Through Miari Texas (2025), we are shown how polemics over urban development and planning will always result in social excesses. Addressing urban problems is difficult because the social excesses of the urban planning system are not included in the design. Social groups that do not fit into the state system will be marginalized, and they will end up in the same place, creating a dark space in between official spaces. Prostitution operates as a platform for these outcasts, namely the lower classes. This is an accumulative gap that is capitalistically exploited by opposing systems through the reorganization of that prostitution: renting land; lending capital; and utilizing the services of prostitutes themselves. Meanwhile, this business is generally an attempt to systematize the desires of modern domination (which are generally male).

This film captures the spatial marginalization faced by sex workers in a modern city, culminating when Miari faces eviction. Anger over the conditions and violence they have experienced, as well as a system that has never accommodated their needs, has caused this battle of interests to continue for years.
