Piranti Jejak-Langkah
Curator: Rafael Marius
All hominid stomachs contain a section designated for breaking down the tough cells of plants. As a result of dietary changes, the sapiens successfully reduced it to the point where it is prone to becoming malignant whenever it becomes blocked or inflamed. Darwin used this dysfunction as a foothold in establishing his theory of evolution: the vestigial organ – a remnant, alongside the tailbone, the nape of the neck, and the wisdom teeth; something that once served a significant function but has been rendered obsolete by the species’ evolutionary timeline. Its presence has become a biological spectre that throws all coherencies of coherence of designed species into disarray, a question mark, much like Da Vinci’s encounter with the appendix, 300 years before Darwin’s conclusion.
Evolution is a dialogue between the body and time in its longest duration. The accumulation of characteristics and appearances suggests a body shaped by a mutual response with the surrounding natural world, rather than by a divine blueprint. This knowledge has been organised on a massive scale by the Western world through its gaze upon the continents and islands of the South, constructing a system of knowledge that holds the power to define the reality of the body as a specimen. A mapped world is a world that can be controlled, and the producer of knowledge will position themselves at the apex of the order. Evolutionary knowledge is a conversation with the observer who gazes upon the branches of discourse-with-time. Vestigiality serves as a signifier of how a particular perspective must respond to an encounter with causeless oddity, by assigning it to a function and concluding that it is merely a trace – something that belongs to the past.
Our current understanding has vestigialized the vestigial framework of the human appendix by revealing its role in supporting the immune system. Perhaps Darwin was indeed too hasty, just as much of knowledge has already run ahead and become established, thus forming the traces of its steps. This suspicion has guided the curatorial objective to frame the vestigial as a panorama of thought rooted in the tension between obsolation-and-function. Every film utilizes a playful dimension as a narrative strategy to reimagine materials considered to be in the past cinematically. The erosion of meaning in materials, technology, concepts and biology is no longer treated merely as a trail of footsteps, but as a stepping stone towards another space-time. They seem to declare that the future will be oriented towards ‘getting in bed with strangeness’—something that has, until now, been readily dismissed as pointless.
Pink Schlemmer (Oliver Husain, 2025) enters that bed, playing off the intensity of pink hues of Margarette Hasting’s 16mm film, whose colour strips are fraying. In the vestiges on that celluloid, one can see Hasting’s attempt to stage Oskar Schlemmer’s experimental dance of the body and visual, Mensch und Kunstfigur. It could be said that Pink Schlemmer is constructing a choreography upon a choreography upon a choreographic design, playing as a means of recalculating the Bauhaus utopian matrix. The Bauhaus movement, of which Schlemmer was a leading exponent, sought to shape a new individual by focusing its aesthetic-pedagogical practices on the exploration of ‘laws within form’; manifested in geometric, proportional and rhythmic forms; or, in other words: mathematical. This precision is, however, countered by another formula from Husain, who calculates the fading of the 16mm Hasting film, which instead emphasises a single hue: pink. This material accident serves as the foundation for Pink Schlemmer in directing his dancers’ movements to the point of skewing the utopian ideals of the avant-garde.
Dramatics out of material sensibilities can be found in the video footage that now interprets the pink radiation of 16mm film into RGB (digital) from CMYK (print). This new metric of light operates like Schlemmer’s costumes, which serve to investigate the dancers’ movements within space, or, in Schlemmer’s terms, the calculations of the architectonic-spatial organism. The movement framed by Hasting’s camera (distinct from Schlemmer’s stage imagination) is reworked by Husain to highlight the mediating nature that invariably distorts the pursuit of formal laws through empirical means alone. The grid over the space that Schlemmer employed to calculate cubical dimensions is replaced by Husain with toilet paper, a transposition of metaphysical-geometric elements into materialistic, everyday matters. The footprints of the dancer in the pink bodysuit shatter the measuring lines, revealing calculations defeated by movement—a shift in focus from rationalistic formal truth to an embodied, organic-centred reality. This is how the film turns imperfection into a constructive force, in order to reclaim space for bodies that were (previously) unimaginable as Bauhaus new man. Schlemmer’s (Vordruck)—which seems to challenge the Vitruvian Man—is now embodied by a plump, pink figure adept at kathak, yoga and Bauhaus stage workshops. It becomes Pink Schlemmer’s statement on who will inherit tomorrow, set against today’s technology that captures the strange vestige from a material eroded by time.
Husain’s work culminates in a subversion of modern-avant-garde thought through these ‘other’ bodies. Celluloid is a truly grand and monumental body, but the pink 16mm film signals that the times are changing. In one monumental shot from Pink Schlemmer, Oskar Schlemmer’s Pole Dance composition is replaced by limp foam—a claim to ownership of modernist knowledge by those in the Global South, the queer and the radical. This mainstream history need not be viewed through the lens of the past, but can be referenced on our own terms.
The technology’s sensibility that brings out the monumental nature of the medium can be found in the gaps between cultural policy and the power of manufacturing as dictated by ideology. In Afternoon Hearsay (2025, Peng Zuqiang), an 8.75 mm film archive—a format circulating only within the People’s Republic of China—is derived from photograms superimposed onto larger-format celluloid negative prints. As it is only a quarter of the size of 35mm, Peng constructs a pseudo-dual-channel system that displays two simultaneous images within a single frame, creating a field that sits above the aspect ratio of digital film. Through this technique, Peng embarks on an exploration of fiction based on rumours, found imagery, and the scanning process, centred on a single question: what would a film without a camera look like? This question is situated within the political currents of Mao Zedong’s cultural policies, which emphasised national self-reliance through closed and independent production.
The Cultural Revolution transformed every aspect of life in the People’s Republic of China from 1966 onwards, including cinema, which at that time promoted yangbanxi film– revolutionary operas – to engage with the peasantry. The hefty weight of 16mm and 35mm projectors, which made it difficult to reach remote areas, prompted the government to produce celluloid and smaller projectors. Among the many options, the 8.75mm format was ideal for converting large-format film material to a smaller format, and this format was not produced by capitalist-oriented countries. Ideology’s desire to reproduce gave rise to hundreds of factories producing projectors and film stock, fostering a culture of film-viewing and controlling film production by offering no cameras to produce the images. The lower resolution allowed smaller projectors to travel more swiftly, reflected in how the speed at which the film rotates is displayed alongside the sounds of electrical current and kinetic movement. Peng seeks to reveal how a system of image production shapes the imagination of what filmmaking is, which he tests by juxtaposing two images: 8.75mm found footage and his own Super 8 footage within the same frame. This juxtaposition reveals the tension between images created with personally owned equipment and those produced by the state using equipment shaped by policy—between the individual and the state, between readily accessible tools and those that never required a desire to record. Furthermore, Peng’s exploration inevitably leads him to the question of vestigiality: what, then, is the significance of this technology today?
In her curatorial note for Arkipel’s Damned of The Earth, Otty Widasari observes that this closed system actually served as the foundation for confronting geopolitical currents that had previously been ‘dominated’ by Western discourse. This system, which stubbornly produced its own suite of technologies in the pursuit of self-sufficiency, proved to possess an autonomy that did not fall into the trap of globalisation. Peng was born long after this technology had ceased to be produced and China had begun to embrace the influence of capitalism. This technology may well be present in his mind as a memory, a trail of ideological and technological footsteps, leading him to rumours about the past of people who lacked home-made images from small celluloid films such as Super 8. Sound, too, is present only as rumour. Afternoon Hearsay both states and speculates on the aesthetic possibilities (almost) without a camera; not in avant-garde experimentation any longer, but in an examination of the capacity for speech in an era of boundless freedom. That even with lenses for the 8.75mm , there is a nervousness that the images it presents will still be the same.
The Inheritors (2025, Serge Olivier Rondeau) takes a different approach to exploring the flow of time and changes in living spaces. It examines an adaptation born of survival strategies in the Anthropocene, historically tested when, at the beginning of the 20th century, the population was on the brink of extinction. Space shapes characteristics, and the transformation of space under modernity imposes a spatial character centred on humanity; consequently, space is fragmented to accommodate human waste. Humanity can be viewed as a closed system, a definitive world that supports only one form of life within a multi-layered world; thus, the form of life that will emerge from the crust of the Anthropocene will be in opposition to it, even if the stomach needs to change.
The Inheritors chronicles the lives of the gulls that inhabit Île Deslauriers, north-east of Montreal, Canada, over the course of a single generation. A shifting ecology emerges between the space where the gulls breed each spring, the city where humans live, and the landfill site where human waste and gull food converge. The film navigates between an observational gaze, the sensory expansion of scavenging at the landfill, and the research agents circulating amongst them. Humans are portrayed as those seeking to understand the times through the guts of gulls that persist in a world of waste—not to pass a ‘healthy-or-sick’ assessment, but to gather data for the future (records show that gull samples have been collected since 1996). This data collection stands in opposition to the cycles that shape the world. To survive, the gulls alter their diet, unaware that they have become non-human agents.
This agency operates through the hundred-year struggle of a species’ bodily existence that refuses to go extinct—on a very micro scale—compared to the duration of change in the stomach contents of Homo sapiens. These branches are merely a snapshot of the long era that humans strive to preserve, even though their agency often fails to connect with that of the seagulls. The understanding of the landfill as both a seagull’s habitat and a human waste site marks the location with layers of interspecies experience. The film depicts this friction through the noise politics of flare explosions and predatory birds, whose eyes we occasionally borrow to view the landfill as a wasteland—an apocalyptic world where life is, in truth, hard to find. Perhaps the digestive system capable of breaking down the omega’s in fish for the seagulls will also atrophy and become prone to inflammation whenever it is blocked or inflamed. At a certain point, there will be new vestigial organs viewed by future generations in the Anthropocene, archived within the seagull’s body.
This panorama of vestiges actually reflects speculation about a future that can be gleaned from things that still cling to the present. Within that queer organ lies mystery and dysfunction; in truth, lies other functions yet to be discovered. The practices of the three films can be described as assembling devices from something that is ‘not-yet’ arrive through the ‘obsolete’. Yet more importantly, the criteria for something to become vestigial are the effects of the observer situated here-and-now. It is from this fragility of life that something new may emerge.
